Helen Rebello (BSc Hons, PgDip, DipBSS-Do)

My name is Helen Rebello, I am a 40-something, married, down-to-earth, Shiatsu practitioner, with a background in Western Medicine.

I have been an exponent of complementary and conventional medicines working concurrently for several years. In younger years, I started training as a nurse, before going on to qualify as a radiographer and ultimately specialising in ultrasound. I was ideally placed to see the areas where conventional medicine was not so effective, but where complementary medicine could really help.

Whilst working as a sonographer, I became increasingly impressed with results that I saw from people who were having complementary therapies in tandem with western medical treatment - to the extent that whilst scanning women for fibroids, I was able to see and document significant positive changes that had occurred as a result of having Chinese medicine in conjunction with western treatment. Other examples followed and I started to become more and more fascinated by the concepts of oriental medicine, and its more optimistic approach to prevention of disease, not just cure.

Having experienced many types of complementary medicine over the years, I eventually discovered Shiatsu, and felt that it offered a safe, effective and enjoyable approach to wellbeing, backed up by countless years of theory. It also emphasised the value of a 'whole body' approach to health, and was totally different to every other therapy I had encountered.

A change of direction beckoned, and I subsequently gained my Shiatsu Practitioner Diploma in February 2007, after 3 intense years study with the British School of Shiatsu-Do. During this time I continued to work as a sonographer, as well as running a part-time student Shiatsu practice. I currently work exclusively with Shiatsu from my busy clinic in West Bergholt.

My western medicine based training and subsequent years of experience have been invaluable to my shiatsu practice, providing important insights and knowledge, and greater understanding of how the body works. Most people accept that the body is a bit like an engine, and that how you treat it determines how well it works. My aim is to help people to unlock their potential and optimise their inner healing abilities, by working in conjunction with them, and offering advice where necessary to help the body run as smoothly as it can.

To this end, I am currently undertaking post-graduate study with renowned international Shiatsu teachers, Saul Goodman and Sensei Akinobu Kishi. I continue to deepen my understanding of Shiatsu by assisting on Shiatsu teaching weekends. I practice yoga and meditation regularly for my own development, and encompass Reiki healing into my practice, to help me work intuitively.

I am a graduate member of the Shiatsu Society and abide by their code of ethics. I have an innate understanding of the need for client confidentiality, and offer an empathic and non-judgemental service, seeing my practice as a two-way partnership - Shiatsu can have miraculous effects in someone who can meet it half way.
